statistical data
Recent analysis of satellite imaging data by the Indonesian Aviation and Space Institute has shown that within the archipelago there are in total 18,108 islands (compared to some 17,000 that were previously believed to exist.) Only about 6,000 of these islands are inhabited with Java accounting for more than half the nation's total population of 238,452,952 (which was the July 2004 estimate). Indonesia has a coastline of 108,920 kilometers (68,075 miles) and a total of 20,731 square kilometers (82,924 miles) of reefs.
